 Forty eight (48) families who fell victim to the devastating fire in Baseco, Tondo, Manila experienced their own "resurrection" last Easter Sunday, April 11, 2004. Less than two months after the launching of the GK Project in Baseco, 48 beautiful and brightly painted homes were turned over to the first batch of beneficiaries. After losing all their possessions, and having to live in container vans, gyms and other evacuation centers, these families now have the opportunity to begin a new life because of Gawad Kalinga.
City of Manila Administrator Dino Nable and other LGU representatives were present during the turnover, together with leaders of Couples for Christ and Gawad Kalinga. Bureau of Customs Commissioner Tony Bernardo was also present, and expressed their commitment to finish a BOC sponsored GK Village for another 48 families.
It was an emotional event, with beneficiaries expressing their joy at their new homes, and their new hope for a new life because of the help of Gawad Kalinga
and all the partners. As a way of expressing their thanks, the families also offered a simple merienda for the guests from their own limited funds. It was
indeed a wonderful Easter event for all the guests.
